nirvana – smells like teen spirit

“I am lucid and clear, recklessly engaged in my own fears
Are you taking notice, expose us, forget it, we’re shifting gears
As scents grow in my nose, I recognize the adolescent souls
It’s American rock n roll, looking on, I said oh baby me gotta go” – Ryan Cox

Nirvana – A Circus Mind

These lines take a nod at the Nirvana youth rebellion track Smells Like Teen Spirit. The first two lines make note of teenage rebellion and angst that are so commonly identified with the song and it’s accompanying video. The third line takes a literal stab at the song’s title. Finally, the last line echoes Rolling Stone contributor Dave Marsh’s assertion that the song was “the ‘Louie Louie’ of the nineties” and wrote, “Like ‘Louie,’ only more so, ‘Teen Spirit’ reveals its secrets reluctantly and then often incoherently.” Tomorrow I’ll jump into the history, influence, and conspiracy surrounding The Kingsmen’s Louie Louie.
